Springfield Armory and 285,500 for Rock Island, the heat treatment was changed making the receivers much stronger. Later, a different type of steel was used altogether in the receivers and bolts. There may be a slight risk of a burst receiver when shooting modern full power ammo in the older rifles. They are generaly desireable as collector pieces rather than shooters. ![]() The early ones used class C steel, and shouldnt be fired with modern ammo. If it were mine, Id error on the side of safety and shoot her with mild loads only. The idea of it coming unglued that close to my head would give me a permanent flinch. They may be fine for hundreds, or even thousands of rouunds, and then fail suddenly. Another thing that catmguy didnt mention is that part of the issue is burnt steel. It seems that these were being heat treated by eye judging by the color of the hot steel, withought the benefit of electric lights. Different weather conditions different light different color burnt or soft steel. Hatchers notebook documents the recorded failures and related injuries. So my question to you is, are you willing to gamble with your eyesight, your fingers, or possibly your life, because somebody else is or because some guys on the internet said that they do Or because they think its safe Theres just too many other fine rifles out there to play with for it to be worth it to me.
